Based on a True Story?...

1. Is Fatal Frame REALLY based on a true story?
Not exactly.
The game is based on classic japanese ghost stories & urban legends. At this point, there is no evidence available to 'prove' the existance of the Himuro Mansion. (Or disprove it entirely). Check out the ritual, himuro, & cultural info portions of the site for more information.
Tecmo published a press release concerning the 'true story' back in 2002. [Read it here]

2. Why would Tecmo say it's a true story when it's not?
Like anyone else, Tecmo wants to sell games, and the 'based on a true story' angle is very popular. This isn't anything new. It makes money, it makes people curious, and it's an angle that sells. Also, the term 'based on a true story' can be used extremely loosely. It is 'based' off of two popular ghost stories in japan which might have basis in fact, so they're not technically lying. The based off a true story sellpoint was not used when the series originally came out in japan.

Himuro Mansion

3. So is the Himuro Mansion REAL?!?!?!
The short answer is no. See the Himuro Mansion article for more details.

4. I found a site called Frightening Reality in a Fantasy World that says...
THIS SITE IS MISLEADING AND WRONG...
Stop there. Don't say anything further. Almost everyone knows about this site because you can find it anytime you google 'Real Himuro Mansion.' The author pretty much grabbed credible information and pictures from other sites to create it. Unfortunately, the information on the site is skewed or wrong causing a lot of misinterpretation and confusion. It's fun to read, but the information on it is wrong and should NOT be used as a credible source for info about Fatal Frame.

5. I've been to the Himuro Mansion.../I've seen pictures of the Mansion.../etc etc.
I have had over a dozen of these 'claimed' emails. Not one of them can offer sufficient proof or the exact locale of where they 'claim' the mansion is. Sad to say, but 99% of people CLAIMING that they have been to the Himuro mansion are most likely lying. Yes, people lie about the silliest things, sad but true. The 'pictures' that have been circulating are of places found all over Japan...not of a specific haunted mansion.

The Game

6. What is Fatal Frame about?
FF is the story of a teenage girl (Miku) has come to the abandoned (supposedly haunted) Himuro Mansion in search of her missing brother Mafuyu. Upon entering, Miku finds herself trapped, unable to leave, and searches through the mansion, trying to find out what happened to her brother...and the novelist group that proceeded him. Her only protection is a camera, which has the ability to exorcise the ghosts she encounters.

7. Why is Fatal Frame called Project Zero in the UK?
Some videogames are renamed in different countries due to marketing or copyright licensing issues. It is actually closer to the original Japanese name of 'Zero' than the US name 'Fatal Frame'. Project Zero might have been called it due to Project Zero also being the name of the development 'team' that created the Fatal Frame series. The name 'Project Zero' is even used in some marketing campaigns for the Japanese version of the series itself.
  • Japan - Zero (The Xbox versions are called Fatal Frame)
  • US - Fatal Frame
  • Europe - Project Zero

    • This website uses the name Fatal Frame to describe the games.

8. How many Nights are there?
4 Nights (not including the Himuro Intro)

9. Where is the save point in this game?
There are cameras in various locations all over the game. They usually have a red glowing light on them. You can save, edit photos, and stock up on film here? If the camera isn't glowing, more than likely a ghost is nearby and you will have to vanquish it before you can save.

10. Did Miku's design change?
Miku's design changed from the Japanese to US/European versions of the game. You can see the full changes of her character here. This design WAS used for the Japanese Xbox version released to the US.

11. Help! I'm low on film!
Look for a save point. Save points in this game will always reload your Type 14 Film to 30 shots. I suggest taking FULL advantage of this feature and loading up to the max/using Type 14 Film when possible. (There is no Type 7 or Type Zero Film in this game)

12. I used gameshark codes and got some strange items, but I can't use them?
These are glitch items. You really can't use them, they just appear in the game when you input codes. They won't hurt/harm/help you

13. I've heard a rumor you can play as Mafuyu?
You do play as Mafuyu for the intro part of the game. You can't play him anywhere else. There is however an apparent glitch in the game, where you can appear as Mafuyu. No ghosts appear, he doesn't have the camera and you're dropped in the Hell Gate area, but you are clearly Mafuyu. The error tends to occur from a a cleared game save and starting new. The save file is entitled 'Himuro' instead of 'Game Clear' This error has occurred in both Pal & US versions of the game. This error is apparently in the Xbox and PS2 versions of the game.

14. What's the number combination for the puzzle door?
Night 1 - 3669 (Strangling Ritual Document)
Night 3 - 1347 (The Calamity Document)

In the PS2 version, this dial is shown using Japanese symbols for the numbers. Consult Koji's Research Notes 5 for the correct kanji/numbers. 0 is at the TOP where the normal twelve position is. In the Xbox version, this was changed to numbers.

15. How do I get all the costumes? Ghosts?
Costumes | FF Spiritlist

16. Is there a themesong for the first game?
No. There wasn't an actual song (like Chou or Koe), more like an instramental piece for the ending. It's never been officially released.

17. What is considered the 'canon' ending of this game?
The first ending where Mafuyu stays behind.

18. Does either Japanese version (PS2 & Xbox) have subtitles in English?
No. Just Japanese.

19. Can I switch to Japanese voices in the US/Euro versions of the game?
No. Sorry.

20. What is the highest Rank you can get in Fatal Frame?
Rank S is the highest.

21. How are Ranks determined?
By how much time it takes a player to get through the game completely. A Rank S is just a little over an hour of gameplay.

22. Do you think they'll re-release the first three games?
While the first three games were recently re-released in Japan (for under $20) as part of a reprint of the Playstation: the best PS2 versions, there has been no news for a reprint/re-release for the US or European territories at this time for any console system.

Character Relationships 23. I'm confused about the flashback scene. Why does Miku see her mother Miyuki hanging in the mansion?
It's not Miyuki, it's Yae. Yae & Miyuki died the same way (committing suicide by hanging themselves). They also look similar because they are related. (Yae is Miyuki's grandmother) The FMV is a little confusing, but Miku has a flash back of her mother Miyuki taking pictures with the camera, and then finding her mother hanging in the tree. When she realizes there IS a woman hanging there, that is Yae. The ghost attacking is Yae.

24. Are Yae & Ryozo the same characters mentioned in Fatal Frame II:Crimson butterfly?
Yes. They are the same characters. FF2 deals with their teenage years, FF1 deals with them as adults.

25. Is Miku related to Mio & Mayu?
No. Mio & Mayu are in no way related to the Hinasaki (miku's family) line.

26. Is Miku related to Yae?
Yes, Yae is Miku's great-grandmother. Not to be confused with Miyuki, Miku's mum, who looks EXACTLY like her, and also hung herself.

27. What is the name of Kirie's lover?
He doesn't have one actually. His Japanese name is Kirie no Omihibito (which literally translated is Lover of Kirie). [More info about him here]

28. Is Miku related to Rei Kurosawa?
There is no information presented ingame or in game guides that talks about Rei's family history. We know absolutely nothing about it. So no, they're not related. If they were, it would have been mentioned.

29. Is the rope shrine maiden in FF3 Kirie?
No. It's Kizuna Himuro, a different rope shrine maiden.

Miku in other Tecmo Games

30. How can I get the Miku Monster in MR4?
You must have a copy of FF1 for the PS2 (it doesn't work with the Xbox version).
The Miku Monster is currently only available in Monster Rancher 4 (PS2), she is not unlockable in future versions of the game series.

31. How do I unlock Miku's costume in Super Swing Golf?
Super Swing Golf #1 - you play through the storyline on all of Hana/Erica's courses to unlock it.
Super Swing Golf #2 - Coming soon.

Fatal Frame Movie

32. I heard there's going to be a Fatal Frame Movie?!
Yes...maybe? It was announced back in 2002. The movie is currently in production limbo.

33. When is the movie coming out? Do you know anything else? Please tell me what you know!
Everything I know about the movie is here. That's ALL I know. Updated and everything.

34. Is (insert name of horror movie here) related to Fatal Frame? Inspired by Fatal Frame? The Fatal Frame Movie?
No. The Fatal Frame Movie itself hasn't even been produced let alone hit theatres in ANY country. I get emails like this all the time when a new Asian horror remake comes out. There have been no movies (as of this moment) that have been noted as being inspired from Fatal Frame series. The game DID however get a verbal mention in the movie Stay Alive (2006).

35. Was Fatal Frame inspired by (insert name of horror movie here)?
For the most part, no. The original game has not been revealed to be inspired by a specific horror movie. Although Keisuke Kikuchi is on record for saying that the original Fatal Frame has nothing to do with the Ringu series, Makoto Shibata recently revealed in an interview that the original concept gameplay (ie fighting ghosts up close with a camera) was inspired by Sadako's crawling through the TV at her victims.

36. Is St. John's Wort (japanese horror movie) based on Fatal Frame?
No. St. John's Wort is based on the popular playstation japanese horror game Otogiriso. An early storyline for Fatal Frame was similar to Otogiriso's storyline, in fact, the game itself may have been an inspiration for the series, but the movie itself is based on THAT videogame, not Fatal Frame.

Merchandise

37. Do you know where I can get FFI for Playstation 2? Xbox?
Ebay, locale gamestore, amazon.com, playasia.com etc. There are several places, so I would look online. Expect to pay a bit for the game, as it's hard to find.

38. Do you know where I can get FFI Merchandise?
Amazon Japan, Yahoo Japan Auctions, Playasia.com, ebay. There are several places...just be prepared to look around a bit, and fork over some cash. For ordering on Amazon Japan, check out the Ordering FAQ

39. Will you sell me some of your merchandise? Will you buy items for me? Etc?
I do not wish to sell any of the FF Merchandise I have collected over the years. Also, I am sorry, but I do not buy items on behalf of others.
